Lingual System Braces
At Art of Smile – Center for Cosmetic Orthodontics, we understand the importance of discretion. Unfortunately, there is a certain stigma associated with traditional metal or ceramic braces, probably due to certain film and television misrepresentations. This is especially true for braces worn by adults.
Luckily, patients have more choices than ever before when it comes to orthodontic treatment. If you feel that traditional braces may affect your professional and personal life, you have come to the right place. We specialize in an alternative to traditional braces known as lingual system braces.
What Are Lingual Braces?
Lingual braces have been around since the 1980s. Moreover, only a select number of orthodontists offer this type of treatment because it requires special training and a certain level of expertise. We pride ourselves on our advanced techniques and continuous education to provide the highest level of care.
Unlike traditional methods, lingual brackets are bonded to the backs of your teeth, closer to the tongue (lower arch) and palate (upper arch). Placing the lingual braces behind the teeth effectively hides the appliance, making it a great cosmetic alternative to conventional braces.
During treatment planning, we first take a 3D scan of your teeth. Our laboratory technicians will use this digital impression to fabricate a customized bracket system. Once your appliance is ready, we will adhere the brackets to the back surfaces of your teeth.
Throughout treatment, the bracket and wire system applies continuous pressure on your teeth, slowly shifting them to a more proper position.
Are Lingual Braces Right For You?
During your initial consultation, Dr. James will determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for lingual braces. Lingual braces are most common amongst our adult patients. Our older patients tend to want a more discreet alternative to traditional braces. If you feel self-conscious about wearing braces, you may be the ideal candidate!
Many of our adult patients ask about a clear aligner system as a possible option. These aligners are made from a special type of plastic, making them virtually invisible during use. However, aligners may not be appropriate for severe malocclusions (misaligned bites). Lingual braces provide both discretion and effective results for serious orthodontic issues.
Advantages Of Lingual Braces
The most obvious advantage of lingual braces is their discreet nature. Because they are hidden behind the teeth, most people will not be able to tell you are wearing lingual braces.
When comparing treatment options, the effectiveness of clear aligners is often dictated by the patient’s commitment to treatment. If you do not wear your aligners close to full time, you could experience slower, less optimal results. For this reason, lingual braces are an advantage because they remain on your teeth at all times.
