Emergencies

Philadelphia, PA

Genuine orthodontic emergencies are actually quite rare, but we’re ready to assist when they do occur. When you first receive an orthodontic appliance at Art of Smile – Center for Cosmetic Orthodontics, we provide you with a kit that can manage most of the common problems people experience with orthodontic appliances. But for more severe problems, you may need to come into our office.

What Is Invisalign?

Loose brackets and wires compose some of the more common orthodontic problems. Give us a call if you are experiencing discomfort.

Patients who play sports or other physical activities must remember to wear a mouthguard to protect their orthodontic appliances. Also, make sure to practice good oral hygiene, caring for both your teeth and your appliances. This can prevent many adverse effects.

Remedies And Interim Care For Minor Orthodontic Problems

If you experience any of the following problems, contact us so we can examine and adjust your orthodontic appliance. The quicker your response time to report any issues you may experience, the more efficiently your treatment will progress.

General Soreness

You may experience some tenderness in your mouth and teeth when you first get your braces and after adjustments. Rinsing with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt and 8 ounces of warm water) can alleviate this. Pain or headache relief medication can work if the soreness is more severe. If symptoms continue, contact us.

Your tongue, cheeks, and lips can also feel uncomfortable as they get used to your new braces. Placing wax on the brackets is extremely effective at soothing these areas. We’ll show you how to do this when you receive your kit at the appointment where we place your appliance.

Loose Wire or Bracket

Placing wax on loose brackets and wires can stabilize the appliance until you can be seen in our office. Save any brackets that separate from the wire and we will schedule an appointment to examine and repair it.
