What Does Orthondontics Means?

Orthodontics can be best described as the field of dentistry specializing in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral or facial abnormalities. While the concept of straightening teeth in itself is nothing new (history of early orthodontic techniques stretches back to the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians), it wasn’t until 1901 that the first official school for orthodontics was opened.

When you require orthodontic treatment, whether braces, or Invisalign clear aligners, you will be referred to our orthodontic specialist, Dr. Amy James. Dr. James has received an extra two years of training in orthodontics, learning how to safely realign teeth and guide your facial development to ensure healthy jaw growth.

Why Is Orthodontic Treatment Important?

The purpose of correcting an orthodontic issue is not only for the sake of appearances but for crucial oral health reasons as well. Misalignment or malocclusions in your bite can make it challenging to speak and chew while at the same time wearing away the enamel. The enamel is the protective layer on your teeth that doesn’t grow back once gone.

This can simultaneously cause extra stress on your gum tissues and the surrounding bone. On top of that, overlapping, crooked, or protruding teeth are harder to properly clean, which can increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. When you make an appointment, Dr. James will go over all of your orthodontic options with you to make sure you get the best possible outcome.

Healthy Orthodontic Habits For Home

The first question to ask when considering whether you need orthodontic treatment is “How is my current oral hygiene?” In any patient’s case, the key to a healthy smile starts with your dental habits at home. The following tips below can help you maintain that smile outside our office:

  • Brush your teeth with a fluoride-containing toothpaste at least twice a day, preferably after every meal or snack and especially before bed.
  • Floss at least twice a day, similarly after every meal. If you have a dental issue that makes this task more difficult, Dr. James can recommend specialized flossing tools to make it easier on you and even provide a demonstration.

Benefits Of Orthodontic Treatment

The best rewards of getting professional orthodontic help are a healthier smile, a beautiful grin to see in the mirror, and overall stronger teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime.
